Rugby: Nigeria Stallions beat Ghana 28-5 in Kampala Sevens opener

Nigeria’s Stallions opened their campaign at the Africa Men’s Sevens Series in Kampala, Uganda, with a convincing 28-5 victory over Ghana on Saturday.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) on Saturday in Abuja.

The federation said the Stallions started the encounter with intensity and sustained pressure, denying their opponents the opportunity to settle into the match.

“From the opening whistle, the Stallions came out firing, bringing intensity, pace and relentless pressure to the contest,” it said.

It said Nigeria’s persistence eventually translated into points as the team maintained its dominance to secure a comfortable victory.

“The Stallions’ persistence eventually paid off as they converted their dominance into points, producing a high-octane performance that saw them run out comfortable winners,” it said.

The victory gives Nigeria an important start to its campaign as it continues its quest in the Kampala tournament.

The Stallions are scheduled to face Morocco in their next Pool A encounter.

According to the statement, Morocco will enter the match looking to recover from a 19-12 defeat to Zimbabwe in its opening fixture.

It said Nigeria would, meanwhile, be seeking another victory ahead of its final group match against Zimbabwe.

In other matches played on Saturday, Zambia defeated Tunisia 10-7, while hosts Uganda recorded a 38-0 victory over Senegal.

The Kampala tournament features eight African nations competing for Africa’s qualification place at the 2027 World Rugby HSBC SVNS 3.

Nigeria is drawn in Pool A alongside Zimbabwe, Ghana and Morocco, while Uganda, Zambia, Tunisia and Senegal make up Pool B.

The NRFF said the Stallions would now focus on their encounter with Morocco as they seek to build on their opening victory.
