'Heavy plastic bag' turns out to be three mortar bombs

Translate

SEPANG: A lorry driver who picked up a heavy package from a pile of rubbish in Sungai Balak, Kajang, was stunned to discover it contained three mortar bombs.

Making the discovery even more alarming, the Roll On Roll Off (Roro) lorry driver had unknowingly transported the package all the way back to his home in Kampung Dato' Ahmad Razali here.

Md Raduan Ghani, 41, said he had started work as usual around 4am on Friday, collecting and disposing of rubbish.

"I drove the lorry to Sungai Balak in Kajang to carry out rubbish disposal work. I separated some of the heavier items.

"After finishing work, I returned home and the red plastic package which I had separated earlier was still in the lorry. I had no idea what was inside," he said when met outside his home this evening.

Raduan said he began removing the items from the package one by one after arriving home and was shocked when he realised they appeared to be bombs.

He alerted a neighbour, who immediately contacted police.

"I went straight to the Dengkil police station to lodge a report. I never imagined something like this would happen. This is the first time I have ever come across anything like this," he said.

Sepang police chief Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman said police received a report from the lorry driver around 3.30pm.

He said personnel from the Dengkil police station secured the area before a Bomb Disposal Unit team from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) was deployed to the scene.

"An inspection was carried out and the three objects suspected to be bombs were removed to a safe location.

"The situation at the scene is under control and the explosives will be destroyed tomorrow," he said.
