Malaysians can choose 5- or 10-year passport validity from Nov 2

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians renewing their passports online can choose between five- and 10-year validity periods from Monday, the Immigration Department said.

The option will be available through the MyOnline Passport system.

"This initiative provides more flexibility and convenience to Malaysian citizens in choosing the passport validity period according to their individual needs," it said in a Facebook post today.

The department had previously standardised the maximum validity of Malaysian passports at 10 years following reports of travellers encountering check-in problems with airlines overseas.

Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban had said the move was also intended to prevent differing interpretations among airlines of the six-month passport validity requirement for international travel.
