MCMC wants explanation over hacking, suspension of Whatsapp accounts

Translate

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission is demanding an explanation from Meta over issues involving WhatsApp accounts that have been suspended, rendered inaccessible, or accessed without authorisation.

MCMC said it had received 92 complaints related to the issue to date.

It said an official request was submitted to Meta on Sept 25, followed by discussions with the tech firm three days later.

“Meta has requested until Oct 2 to provide feedback regarding the matter.

“MCMC urges Meta to also provide a solution for affected users accounts. We will determine subsequent actions based on that feedback,” it said in a statement today.

Earlier today, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said he had instructed MCMC to issue a statement clarifying Meta’s response regarding the hacking and deactivation of WhatsApp accounts.

Fahmi said he has yet to receive updates on the outcome of the discussions between MCMC and Meta concerning the matter.

MCMC also said it was examining the complaints received and had forwarded the cases to Meta for clarification and further action.
