Why did the Netherlands close its embassy in Cairo?

Translate

The Dutch Embassy in Cairo announced on Thursday, the closure of its building to the public until further notice, in a step it described as a precautionary measure following demonstrations taking place around the embassy premises.

This development comes in the context of protests witnessed outside the embassy in recent days following the arrest and detention of Egyptian national Ahmed Nasser in the Netherlands.

Why has public service been suspended at the Embassy?

Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported that Dutch authorities arrested Nasser in The Hague following police reports and complaints filed by Egyptian activist Anas Habib—the activist who gained notoriety for locking the gates of the Egyptian embassy in The Hague—alleging threats, intimidation, and suspected physical assault.

The decision to close the Dutch embassy building in Zamalek, Cairo to the public—which halts public consular services like visa processing and in-person consular appointments—was made by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs purely as a security and precautionary measure.

Cause of closure

The closure was prompted by days of ongoing demonstrations and protests outside the embassy building in Cairo. Protesters gathered to demand the release of Egyptian citizen Ahmed Nasser, who was detained by Dutch authorities in the Netherlands.

Safety concerns

During the demonstrations, the embassy had to be evacuated for security reasons. To ensure the physical safety of embassy staff, visitors, and the public, the Dutch government decided to suspend in-person consular operations until further notice.
